Fix – it genes

Our new-ish sod, the new tile in the bathroom

We have now owned our house for just over a year. I have discovered that I inherited my dad’s, mother-in-law’s and sister-in-law’s “fix-it” genes, and have hung fans and lights, tiled the girls’ bathroom floor, painted, fixed various parts of our toilets, laid some sod in the front yard, and transplanted, removed and trimmed various shrubbery. And the best part of all is that I honestly enjoy it.

A couple months ago I was tiling the bathroom floor while Meredith and Coriena were asleep and Erik had taken Lauren out for some Daddy-daughter time. As I sat their slapping down morter and tiles, I had such a feeling of joy and contentment (maybe I should have included this in “6 weird things about me!!“)

I ended up making about 8 trips to the Lowes to replace the sink I accidentally broke while tiling the girl’s bathroom. Since most of those trips also included the 3 girls, that was kind of a pain. So: don’t lean on your pedistal sink that is minus the pedistal while you’re tiling – when it falls and breaks you’ll be really sad/mad!!
I have learned some valuable lessions:

  • fans are a pain in the neck to hang since you have to hang them and then attach all the blades – especially if the wiring is labeled wrong and it take you and your sister-in-law about 5 tried to figure that out
  • I should never have a fountain, since the “tinkling” of my toilet when it needs the flapper valve changed drives me crazy
  • you are actually supposed to remove your baseboards when you tile a room – oops!!
  • caulk is supposed to go on really thin

Way to go Rinnie!! I also like to do handy work-I was always my Daddy’s “helper” and somehow learned a little something along the way?! But, I usually break something in the process. Hint-when replacing the valve on your toilet-don’t tighten the bolt too tight-the tank will really break!!!!!!!!

looks great rin. i can’t wait till we have our own house and can “improve” it. we get the desire to buy a house more and more but don’t know the timing…kinda like deciding when to have kids. :)

I think for your next birthday I’m going to buy you a tool belt. Either that or a gift certificate to Lowe’s.
Then you can come to my house and get your fix-it itch scratched!

Wow! I am the opposite…I try to do as little stuff like that as possible and leave it to Jason. However, I did hang my curtains and pictures and stuff like that. So, you go girl!

Yay Rinnie! Home improvement IS fun! I always have more ideas than money, though! :)

Let’s hear it for Rinnie … the Tool Belt Diva. You’re in good company around this family. Now I can buy you strange home improvement gifts for your birthday, like I do for Mom.
